Attempting to make sense of this game would be preposterous. Player ratings are probably the least of your worries when the Reds have just won by five goals to four in the 95th minute.
We can try to analyse this game for days but sometimes, an incident occurs which throws everything else off the agenda. Liverpool’s problems – and there are lots of them – are another concern for another day.
This Saturday afternoon is simply about Adam Lallana’s volley into the back of Declan Rudd’s net and the celebrations that ensued. Nothing else should matter.
But nonetheless, here’s how each player fared.
Simon Mignolet - 2
The bloke’s useless. The shot-stopper argument simply doesn’t wash anymore. He let four past him today and should have kept out at least two of them.
Nathaniel Clyne - 4
The England man’s form has dipped slightly in recent weeks. Jon Flanagan’s return to fitness might spur him on to improve.
Kolo Toure - 4
Just about the best of what was, on the day, an appalling bunch of defenders.
Mamadou Sakho - 3
Incompetent in the air all day, and he backs off his man for each of their equalisers. At least he didn’t give the ball away.
Alberto Moreno - 1
I frankly don’t care what else he did; Moreno’s double foul for the penalty was absolutely pathetic.
Lucas Leiva - 5
Bit sluggish, but got his foot in at some important times and gave the ball to the better players around him.
Emre Can - 3
Asleep for Steven Naismith’s goal, and generally poor in possession all day.
Jordan Henderson - 5
Scores a good goal, but not much else to write home about.
James Milner - 6
Works hard – obviously – and takes his gift of a goal well. Nicely weighted pass for the opener, but still not convinced he’s a front three player.
Jordon Ibe - 6
Terrific burst past Ivo Pinto and cutback in the early stages, but Liverpool couldn’t get the ball to him enough after that. Unlucky to be withdrawn, and visibly disgruntled by it.
Roberto Firmino - 8
Great movement for the first goal, and an absolutely glorious finish for the second. The goals are starting to rack up nicely from Bobby F. Bring in Alex Teixeira to play off him and we could be in business.
SUB: Adam Lallana - 10
Forget Manchester City, Chelsea, and Southampton away. Lallana’s 95th-minute strike eclipses them all. Terrific assist for the 3-3 goal, too.
SUB: Christian Benteke - 6
Did some tidy stuff when he came on. Held the ball up well and used it smartly.
SUB: Steven Caulker - N/A
Don’t know. Always nice to see the fella. Up the Reds.
