Alex Teixeira has told officials at his club, Shakhtar Donetsk, that he wants to leave the Ukranian side and join Liverpool, according to a report from Sky Sports.
It was reported last week that the Reds had made a bid of around £25m for the 26-year-old, but that was rejected as Shakhtar are looking for a higher fee.
According to Sky Sports, Teixeira has made it clear to Shakhtar that he wants a move to Merseyside and his representatives are waiting for a response from the club as they look to do whatever it takes to get a deal done.
In order to have bid accepted, Liverpool will need to increase their bid to around £38m, which is the amount the Liverpool Echo say Shakhtar value the Brazilian at.
The transfer window closes in a week’s time, and the Reds will be keen to avoid leaving the deal until the last minute having failed to sign Yevhen Konoplyanka on deadline day in January 2014.
