Jurgen Klopp takes his Liverpool side to a familiar setting for him on Thursday night, as the Reds face Bundesliga opposition for the first time since they appointed the German.
With a place in the Premier League top four almost out of the question, the Europa League represents Liverpool’s best chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
The Reds will have to navigate five ties (nine matches) if they are to win the competition, and standing in their way is Augsburg, their last 32 opponents.
How has Klopp fared in previous meetings with the Bavarian outfit? Let’s take a look.
26/10/07 - FSV Mainz 1-1 Augsburg
Jurgen Klopp’s first clash with Augsburg as a manager came when he was in charge of Mainz. He was denied a win by an equaliser from the visitors 10 minutes from time.
11/04/08 - Augsburg 2-1 FSV Mainz
Augsburg put a huge dent in Mainz’s 2.Bundesliga promotion hopes as they picked up a 2-1 win over Klopp’s side at the business end the 2007-08 campaign.
1/10/11 - Dortmund 4-0 Augsburg
Klopp became Borussia Dortmund’s boss in 2008, and three years later, he and Augsburg met again, this time in the German top flight. A Robert Lewandowski hat-trick and a Mario Gotze effort ensured a comfortable triumph for the reigning champions.
10/3/12 - Augsburg 0-0 Dortmund
Frustratingly for Jurgen, his Dortmund side were held at the WWK Arena in March 2012, but they still went on the retain the Bundesliga title by an eight-point margin.
10/11/12 - Augsburg 1-3 Dortmund
Exactly eight months after their goalless draw, Dortmund returned to Augsburg and put on a ruthless display, with the imperious Lewandowski among the goals again.
6/4/13 - Dortmund 4-2 Augsburg
Augsburg led 2-1 at half-time at the Westfalenstadion, but a second-half fightback, which began with Julian Schieber’s second goal of the game, saw Klopp’s men complete the double over Fuggerstädter.
10/8/13 - Augsburg 0-4 Dortmund
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made the dream start to his Dortmund career, netting a hat-trick on debut. Imagine him at Anfield!
25/1/14 - Dortmund 2-2 Augsburg
Ji Dong-won, who Premier League fans may remember from his time at Sunderland, scored the equaliser as Dortmund failed to keep pace with Bayern Munich in the 2013-14 campaign. The South Korean still plays for Augsburg.
29/8/14 - Augsburg 2-3 Dortmund
Klopp’s final visit to Augsburg as Dortmund manager ended in victory, despite a late flourish from Markus Weinzierl’s side.
Marco Reus, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Adrian Ramos put the away team 3-0 to the good, but efforts from Raul Bobadilla and the Tim Matavz (who is now on loan at Genoa) made it a nervy climax for Klopp.
This was the German’s third successive victory at the WWK Arena – a trend he will hope to continue with Liverpool this Thursday.
4/2/15 - Dortmund 0-1 Augsburg
Klopp’s most recent encounter with Augsburg was in the Bundesliga last term, when a second half Raul Bobadilla strike earned the visitors the points. Not even a red card for Augsburg’s Christoph Janker on 64 minutes could aid the hosts.
Bobadilla has scored 11 goals this term, including one against Bayern Munich on Valentine’s Day, and will be one for the Reds to watch on Thursday.
