After demolishing Aston Villa 6-0 a few days ago, Liverpool fans across the globe were shaking in anticipation of another enjoyable and successful away day.
But 0-0, away from home, it’s not all bad – actually a good result. But the performance? That wasn’t so great.
Probably, overall, the better side. But that says more about the home team than it does the Reds.
Not many standout performers for Liverpool, but who played well and who was poor?
Simon Mignolet - 6
Such was the nature of the game, the Belgian didn’t have much to do. However, there was an important moment towards the end of the first-half where he was called upon and came out quickly and made himself big. Another clean sheet, too.
Nathaniel Clyne - 6
Solid enough defensively. Gave the ball away a few times which is really annoying. I feel as if he should give us more going forward than he does. It seems he has all the attributes necessary to do so. I don’t know what it is.
Kolo Toure - 7
Brilliant was our Kolo. He’s been real good recently. Could’ve and perhaps should’ve scored from a free-kick that was whipped in from Alberto Moreno, but he dealt with everything really well that came his way and that is absolutely all you can ask for.
Mamadou Sakho - 7
Sakho was very good, too, like Kolo. Both of them looked really strong. One criticism of him was that chance Augsburg had at the end of the first-half; where was he? Apart from that – passed the ball well, good in the air and defensively sound.
Alberto Moreno - 6
Not Moreno’s best game, but by no means disastrous. The reason it’s a six and not a seven was his positioning was abysmal at times. A label often thrown at the Spaniard and today did him no favours in proving the critics wrong. He did make some very good tackles, though and it is unbelievably impressive that sometimes he can wrap his foot around a player who is two yards ahead of him and win the ball cleanly.
James Milner - 5.999999
It’s really difficult to rate Milner’s performance. He did well first-half but there isn’t an individual moment that strikes out to me. Perhaps that’s the sort of player he is, or maybe that’s harsh. He wasn’t very good second-half and Klopp was right to drag him off when he did. Didn’t quite cut a six did James.
Jordan Henderson - 5
Henderson was poor tonight. He hasn’t looked quite 100% since returning from injury. But against Augsburg he showed no conviction whatsoever. A couple of shots he had in decent positions, but they were hit so tentatively. Put your foot through it, son. Still, I’m completely backing Henderson to come through this bad spell as he’s a tremendous player.
Emre Can - 6
Decent enough game. Nothing special. He gave the ball away a few times but he seems to do that even if he’s playing well. Maybe that’s just something we’re going to have to learn to accept with the German. Defensively fine; can’t remember him being in their half much.
Roberto Firmino - 7
Really good from Firmino yet again. This is without question his best spell in a Liverpool shirt. His end product is definitely something to be worked on (see his chance early on), but it’s looking like that will improve as his performances do.
Philippe Coutinho - 7
Thought him and Firmino linked well sometimes. Very classy performance. Looked our most dangerous player going forward. A really slick no-look pass; they’re great. That’s a whole rating, there.
Daniel Sturridge - 5
Not great from Sturridge at all. Klopp may have told him to not try 100% as stupid as that sounds. Didn’t get involved in the game at all and was subbed just over an hour in. Still the best striker in the league.
Jordon Ibe - 6 (Sub)
He did okay. Not great, not bad. Only had 10 or so minutes. Had a chance where maybe he should have done better. That picture of him is great, though.
Divock Origi - 6 (Sub)
No kisses for big Divock tonight.
