Jürgen Klopp is ready to rebuild Liverpool’s central defence, after this week’s signing of Joel Matip, and according to Fichajes via the Express, the Cameroonian could be joined in the summer by former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.
The Belgian international has yet to make a significant impact since joining the Blaugrana in 2014, and may be set to leave, with the Spanish outlet claiming the Reds are keen and that a return to England would be his preference.
Vermaelen has made only 14 appearances for the Catalonian giants this season, and of those, a mere six have been in La Liga matches.
The 30-year-old is still very much in his prime, and securing his signature would be considered a coup for Klopp’s Liverpool.
His arrival would bring leadership and experience to the defence – something that the Reds have lacked since the departures of Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger.
The report states that the former Ajax academy product is also being tracked by Chelsea, who will be looking to find a replacement for John Terry.
