As Liverpool prepare to take on Manchester City on Sunday in the Capital One Cup final, we look back at the last five encounters between the two sides.
There have been some truly spectacular games between the two. It’s safe to say Philippe Coutinho hasn’t had a bad time against City during these games.
Will these last five results have any bearing on how the sides perform in the first domestic final of the season on Sunday?
Manchester City 1-4 Liverpool (21/11/15)
The last time these sides met, earlier on this season, Liverpool were allowed to run rampant at the Etihad. The Reds were truly sensational and City were dismal. An own goal from Eliaquim Mangala and goals from Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and late on from Martin Skrtel saw Liverpool pick up perhaps their most impressive win this season. Sergio Aguero scored to make it 3-1 but it was merely a consolation.
Liverpool 2-1 Manchester City (01/03/15)
A game that was decided by two tremendous strikes. Jordan Henderson scored a magnificent goal early on to send Anfield into dreamland before Edin Dzeko equalised for the visitors. A second-half screamer from Philippe Coutinho won it for the Reds who were brilliant on the day.
Manchester City 3-1 Liverpool (25/08/14)
A particularly comfortable win for City, this one. Liverpool were in transition with all of their new signings from the summer and never really got going. Two goals from Stevan Jovetic and a great Sergio Aguero finish meant that a Rickie Lambert header counted for very little.
Liverpool 3-2 Manchester City (13/04/14)
An unbelievably emotional day at Anfield due to the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster was fittingly matched by a mouthwatering encounter. Liverpool raced into an early 2-0 lead with Raheem Sterling and Martin Skrtel getting on the scoresheet. In the second-half, though, Manchester City brought their A-game. David Silva’s effort and an own goal from Glen Johnson meant that the sides were level. Heartbreak for Liverpool until a mistake from Vincent Kompany allowed Philippe Coutinho to win it for the Reds. Ecstasy at the end for the players and fans.
Manchester City 2-1 Liverpool (26/12/13)
A boxing day visit to the Etihad for the Reds who actually got off to an excellent start. They were all over City and they made their dominance count through a quality team goal with Philippe Coutinho (yes, again) putting the Reds into an early lead. However, Vincent Kompany made sure the Liverpool fans’ joy was short lived with an equaliser on the half hour mark. Alvaro Negredo put the Citizens into a 2-1 half-time lead following a Simon Mignolet error and that proved to be the winner.
