Yossi Benayoun signed for Liverpool from West Ham United for £5m in 2007. He went on to play 134 times for The Reds, scoring 29 goals.
His first season at Anfield went well; he made 26 starts and was introduced from the bench a further 21 times. He scored 11 goals that year, including two hat-tricks, and at the time looked worth every penny of the £5million that Liverpool paid for him.
His second season went well too; he made 42 appearances, scoring nine times, including a winner in the Bernabeu (more on that later)…
Yossi’s third and final season with Liverpool went along an equally similar path; Yossi was nothing if not consistent! He played 45 games and netted nine times, including another hat-trick against Birmingham City. At the time, that made him the only man to score hat-tricks in games in the Premier League, the Champions League and the FA Cup.
Yossi was a very intelligent player, and it wasn’t a coincidence that he found himself in the right place at the right time so often. His close control and vision for a pass was delightful, and I still think he left the club too early when he departed for Chelsea after falling out with Rafa Benitez.
Yossi provided us with some great goals, here’s my top five:
