Well, thank goodness that’s over. Also thank goodness this Premier League season is all but done with. The Reds’ limp display against Chelsea rather summed up Liverpool’s underwhelming league campaign.
It looks for all the world as though an eighth-place beckons. Nobody wanted to see that.
But the Reds did what the Reds have done pretty well at Anfield of late – snatched a last gasp goal. And it was Christian Benteke, not for the first time in fairness, that came up trumps.
The result means nothing in the grand scheme of things, and it was a match that I’ll probably forget even took place in a few weeks, but it’s good to get into the habit of refusing to be beaten – particularly at home against a side like Chelsea who none of us are keen on.
Each player that was poor tonight is lucky in that everybody else was crap too. So nobody is really in danger of missing out on a place in the team next Wednesday based off this display.
Here are my player ratings.
Simon Mignolet - 5
Horrendous indecisiveness when Bertrand Traore was put through was infuriating. He didn’t have much else to do.
Nathaniel Clyne - 5
Wasn’t his best night, but to be fair he was up against Eden Hazard who was imperious.
Dejan Lovren - 5
Was never going to get a high score after he tried to score from 30 yards.
Kolo Toure - 6
Never mind John Terry, here’s a fella who needs a new contract.
Alberto Moreno - 6
Half decent. Always provided an option down the left.
Adam Lallana - 5
I absolutely love the gorgeous chap, but even I started to get a bit cheesed off with his lack of end product tonight.
Emre Can - 6
One or two misplaced passes and a general lack of concentration throughout the game.
James Milner - 6
Anonymous by his standards. Gloriously late tackle on Cesc Fabregas, mind.
Philippe Coutinho - 6
Tried to get the Reds going but never quite came off for him.
Roberto Firmino - 5
No idea where he was meant to be playing. I’m convinced he’s the most bizarre, brilliant, terrible footballer in the world.
Daniel Sturridge - 5
Isolated until the introduction of Christian Benteke. Probably could’ve offered more until that point though.
SUB: Joe Allen - 6
Can’t be a coincidence that he comes on and the Reds up the ante, can it.
SUB: Christian Benteke - 7
Staggering that Aston Villa only charged us £32.5m for him.
