Liverpool close to new signing as Karius arrives for medical
FSV Mainz 05 goalkeeper Loris Karius has arrived on Merseyside to complete a medical ahead of a £4.7million switch to the Reds, as per a report from Paul Joyce of The Express.
The German joined Mainz in 2011 after spending time as a youngster playing at Manchester City’s academy. For two years, he played for the Mainz reserve team, making 27 appearances.
He made his first appearance for Mainz in the Bundesliga in December 2012 after their goalkeeper was sent off. Since then,he has made 84 appearances, helping the team secure a place in the Europa League for the first time in their history.
Karius will join the former Mainz and Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, and will provide competition for their current goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
Time will tell if Karius will be the Reds’ starting goalkeeper next season, but with Mignolet being so inconsistent, it’s hard to imagine the Belgian winning any battle fot the starting role.
