Liverpool will play Championship sides Wigan Athletic and Huddersfield Town in two of four domestic pre-season fixtures this summer, the club has announced.

The Reds will travel to League One Champions Wigan on July 17, then face a trip to Huddersfield – managed by Juergen Klopp’s former assistant David Wagner – on July 20.

Before then, the Reds will visit Tranmere Rovers on July 8 – in what is expected to be the club’s first outing of the summer – before a trip to Fleetwood Town on July 13.

All of Klopp’s pre-season preparations must take place away from Anfield this season, with redevelopment work on the new main stand expected to continue until the end of August.

And the club had already announced matches against Chelsea and AC Milan in California as part of their International Champions Cup campaign, before finalizing a Wembley showdown with Barcelona just days ago.

But local Reds will now be pleased with the additions to the pre-season schedule, after previously having faced a 450-mile round trip to watch the side in action this summer.

Liverpool will of course be no strangers to meetings with Wigan Athletic, having played each other regularly during the Latics’ recent stint in the Premier League.

During their last season in the top flight three years ago, the Reds ran out 3-0 winners at Anfield before inflicting a 4-0 thrashing at the DW Stadium.

But competitive meetings against Tranmere and Huddersfield are few and far between, whilst the Reds have never played Fleetwood in a competitive fixture before.

The last time Liverpool faced Tranmere was 15 years ago, and Gerard Houllier’s side ran out 4-2 winners in the FA Cup Quarter-Final tie.

Just twelve months previous comes the Reds last meeting with Huddersfield – again in the FA Cup, and again a victory for Houllier’s men thanks to goals from Titi Camara and Dominic Matteo.
