Skrtel to call time on eight-year Liverpool stay
Slovakian defender Martin Skrtel is set to leave Liverpool after eight years at the club as Fenerbahce have agreed a £7million fee with the Reds, according to The Guardian.
Skrtel has made over 320 appearances for Liverpool since arriving in 2008, including twenty in the Champions League and 18 in the Europa League, but he has fallen down the pecking order under current boss Jurgen Klopp.
Even when Mamadou Sakho was unavailable to partner Dejan Lovren in defence last season, 35-year-old Kolo Toure was Klopp’s preferred choice. Having made just four starts under Klopp since the turn of the year, Skrtel decided to call time on his eight-year-long Liverpool career.
Clubs from Germany and China were alerted by Skrtel’s situation and submitted offers to the 29-year-old, as per The Guardian, but Turkey was his preferred destination.
Personal terms are yet to be finalised, but the deal is said to be close. Should the deal go through as expected, Skrtel will be the second defender to leave Anfield this summer, following the release of Toure.
