Club president says Liverpool want to buy one of his players
Rodolfo D’Onofriohas, the President of Argentinian side River Plate, says that Liverpool are interested in signing defender Gabriel Mercado from his club.
The 29-year-old defender is currently representing Argentina at the Copa America, and according to D’Onofriohas, the only way the Reds can sign the player is if his country win the tournament.
Mercado would need to apply for a work permit if he was to join Liverpool, and the qualification system is based on a points scale. According to D’Onofriohas, winning the tournament with Argentina will allow Mercado to meet the requirements needed to get a permit and therefore make the switch from River Plate to Merseyside.
D’Onofriohas told Fox Sports:
Klopp likes him but for Mercado to go to England, Argentina need to be champions. Winning a title with the national team would allow him to play in England.
Last week, the online Liverpool community saw Jurgen Klopp at Argentina’s game with Chile in the Copa America, but apparently he was actually scouting Mercado, not the Napoli striker.
Time will tell if Liverpool can get their man, but if thay want him, they’ll need some help from Lionel Messi and company.
