Loris Karius sidelined for 8-10 weeks
Loris Karius is set to start his Liverpool career with disappointment as a period of 8-10 weeks on the sidelines awaits him.
The German goalkeeper has broken his hand and will miss the start of the season for the Merseyside club according to numerous reports.
The injury was reportedly suffered after he collided with Dejan Lovren in a pre-season game against Chelsea. Use this bet365 bonus code to back the weekend’s football.
Karius joined the Reds earlier this transfer window and has only made a handful of appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The 23-year-old decided against appearing at the Rio Olympics for his country in order to further his chances of a starting berth against Arsenal on August 14th.
This latest setback, however, will rule him out of that Premier League opener as well as a number of games afterwards.
It’s a blow for Liverpool, who have only just welcomed back Simon Mignolet to the pre-season fold after his time at Euro 2016 with Belgium.
It was, at this stage, unknown who Klopp would have made first choice for the Arsenal game and indeed the upcoming season, but with both ‘keepers available to him, at least he had a choice.
It’s highly likely now, of course, that Mignolet will be that number one – for this period of time at very least.
Liverpool recently signed veteran goalkeeper Alex Manninger and the Austrian may well get some unexpected bench time for the Reds, during Karius’ absence.
Karius will fly home from the USA today.
