Jurgen Klopp’s men will look to get back on track in the Premier League against Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs side after last week’s disappointing defeat to Burnley.
They travel to White Hart Lane knowing that another slip-up means more ground lost on league rivals, despite it being early on in the season.
Although he is back in training, Loris Karius isn’t expected to return for a couple of weeks whilst key players Emre Can (ankle) Divock Origi (muscle cramps) and Phillipe Coutinho (hamstring) all look set to miss out.
On the bright side, danger man Sadio Mane is back for Liverpool and looked just as sharp against Burton Albion as he did before his injury against Arsenal.
This game last season was Klopp’s first in charge of Liverpool and we should expect another close game between the two sides with neither team obviously wanting to drop points to a rival.
Whilst it is early days in the league, a win for Liverpool would see them leapfrog Spurs, but a win for Tottenham and Liverpool will already find themselves four points behind the Lilywhites.
Here is my predicted starting XI for the game:
Goalkeeper: Simon Mignolet
No real decision for the manager to make here, new boy Karius is still out with a broken hand and Alex Manninger provides no real competition for a place between the sticks.
Right Back: Nathaniel Clyne
An impressive showing midweek despite the quality of the opposition, providing a wonderful cross for Firmino’s goal.
Centre Back: Dejan Lovren
The most established defender in the team, Lovren will be starting against Spurs and will have his work cut out coming up against Harry Kane.
Centre Back: Joel Matip
The questionable defending against Burnley last week gave Matip a chance to cement his role in the team. With no slip ups against Burton, it looks like him and Lovren will now try to form a defensive partnership.
Left-Back: James Milner
Jurgen Klopp defended Alberto Moreno after his showing against Arsenal, but has since opted for the versatile Milner at left back. Despite it not being his usual position, it seems that the Englishman is now first choice for that spot.
Midfield: Jordan Henderson
Many have been quick to slate Liverpool captain Henderson for his performances over the last week, but with the recent injury to Can and no other midfield options in the squad it looks like he will keep his place.
Midfield: Georginio Wijnaldum
Dropped (or rested?) for the game against Burton in favour of Emre Can, it is unsure who would have made way for the German if he was fit to play Spurs. As it goes, Wijnaldum will now be expected to start alongside Henderson at the weekend.
Midfield: Adam Lallana
Making up the midfield three is Adam Lallana, despite being an attacking midfielder, I expect he will take up the same role that he did against Arsenal on the opening weekend.
Left Forward: Roberto Firmino
Firmino was impressive on the lef side of midfield against Burton and managed to open his competitive scoring account for the season. Jurgen Klopp likes to play Firmino in the false nine role for big away games but with Coutinho missing, he should start in the same position as he did in midweek.
Right Forward: Sadio Mane
Sorely missed in the game against Burnley last weekend, the pacy Senegalese winger made his return from injury midweek and once again impressed. Danny Rose will have a tough time coming up against this guy on Saturday.
Daniel Sturridge
Anything you can do, I can do better. With a poor showing against Burnley, Sturridge found himself watching from the bench as Origi scored and impressed against Burton. Once he was subbed onto the pitch, Sturridge had a point to prove and he proved it, netting twice to seal a 5-0 win for the Reds.
