Liverpool rallied late on to defeat a stubborn Sunderland and return to the top of the Premier League, albeit for a few hours, though the victory was marred by a potentially serious injury to Philippe Coutinho.

The Reds squandered a host of opportunities, with Sunderland offering little attacking threat, and failed to capitalise on nearly 80% possession in the first half.

Coutinho, arguably Liverpool’s player of the season so far, was stretchered off just after the half-hour mark, clutching his ankle following a challenge from Didier N’dong.

As the home crowd grew frustrated, Divock Origi finally broke the deadlock with an apparent cross-cum-shot before James Milner wrapped up the three points from the spot after Ndong had brought down Sadio Mane.
