The new year continues to be cruel to the Reds, despite the false dawn of a decent midweek performance against Chelsea. Liverpool capitulated yet again, this time falling away to Hull City 2-0 in an unsurprisingly familiar fashion.

For all the flying, dynamic, and free-flowing football Liverpool played for the first few months of the season in 2016, 2017 has provided the complete flip side in form, function, and frame of mind. With talk of a title challenge now ruthlessly dismissed, the entire season now lies precariously in the balance.

There can be no question now that Jurgen Klopp faces his greatest challenge since joining Liverpool and possibility the biggest of his managerial career.

The Liverpool manager now needs to show the same kind of ruthlessness he exhibited in the Mamadou Sakho situation to wrestle the club from the brink of implosion.
