Setback for Reds in Julian Brandt chase
Liverpool will face stiff competition in their efforts to sign Bayer Leverkusen winger Julian Brandt after it emerged that Real Madrid are also interested in the 20-year old.
The Spanish giants reportedly sent scouts to watch the German in Tuesday’s Champions League Round of 16 tie against Atletico Madrid.
The Bundesliga side fell to a 4-2 defeat, but Brandt was impressive once again, causing problems for one of Europe’s strongest defences.
The news is a blow for Jurgen Klopp given that Brandt has been persistently linked with a move to Anfield in recent months.
However, with Cristiano Ronaldo currently occupying Brandt’s favoured position on the left flank, Liverpool surely represent the better option if he is seeking regular playtime.
Real’s interest in the youngster is certainly understandable. Brandt has notched three goals and six assists this term, a consistent starter for Leverkusen in spite of his tender years, and has already enjoyed four caps for his country.
Should the Reds miss out on Brandt, Leicester’s promising winger Demarai Gray has been mooted as a potential alternative.
Gray, known for his pace and agility, has made 27 appearances for the Foxes this season and could provide cover for Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane.
