Liverpool are readying a €40 million bid for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Gelson Martins as the Reds look to bolster their attacking options this summer, according to a report from A Bola, cited on Sport Witness.
The Reds are keen to bring the Portuguese winger to Anfield but it will cost them at least €50 million as Sporting rate the player very highly. Martins signed a contract extension keeping him at Sporting until 2022 and he currently has a €60 million release clause.
The 22-year-old really caught the eye this season by scoring six goals and registering nine assists. His stand out performance came against Spanish champions Real Madrid in the Champions League in September, where he caused havoc to their defence.
Martins is mostly a right-sided midfielder, but he can also operate on the left and just behind the striker, where his close dribbling stands out.
Martins can also play in right-back as he has experience in that position for club and country at youth level.
The youngster started his youth career at Sporting’s rivals Benfica, before switching allegiances and breaking through to the Sporting first team, where he is now a regular.
