Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger has insisted that Liverpool target Virgil Van Dijk will not be leaving this summer.
Krueger says that Southampton will not be selling Van Dijk this summer as the club looks to make a statement of intent.
Southampton have had a growing reputation for selling their best players every summer since their return to the Premier League, but are looking to change that from now on.
Twitter: #SaintsFC chairman Krueger is adamant that Van Dijk is “not for sale in this window” as keeping him is “the statement we need to make” (@SimonPeach)
Twitter: Krueger: “It’s the principle, path & statement we need to make to get to a new space as a club. We’re adamant about carrying this through” (@SimonPeach)
Twitter: Krueger praised “strong leader” Pellegrino, saying he’s dealing “very well” with Van Dijk – pair are “communicating openly with each other” (@SimonPeach)
Van Dijk’s transfer saga has been well publicised. He handed in a transfer request earlier this month.
Liverpool were forced to issue an apology to Southampton after they were accused of tapping up Van Dijk last month.
Jurgen Klopp is said to be very keen on the Dutch defender but it appears as though a move this summer is out of the question.
Southampton, despite Van Dijk’s insistence on leaving, expect the Dutchman to honour his contract and stay at the club.
