Liverpool must seize their chance tonight
Aside from a poorly conceded goal in the final minutes against Watford and another against Hoffenheim in the first leg of the Champions League ualifier, Liverpool have looked like what I always feared they would like; good.
Through a summer of doubts and close-calls, Liverpool supporters appeared to be preparing for the usual calamitous beginning and disappointing end of another Premier League season, but tonight proves an opportunity to ensure that feeling stays away another week longer.
A 3-3 result at Watford threatened to knock us off our perch in the juvenile weeks of August, but consecutive victories over Hoffenheim and Crystal Palace have created a bit of a buzz within the Liverpool camp.
With the added bonus of Philippe Coutinho’s fate being settled, we as supporters have every right to dream big and dream long for the upcoming campaign. Where once we thought of catastrophe, great treasures lie in wait, and our job is now to seize them.
The addition of Mohammed Salah and the emergence of Trent Alexander-Arnold have been two early highlights for Liverpool and assuming Sadio Mane can remain healthy for the duration of the season, these three players will have a significant impact going forward.
Tonight, Liverpool have the chance to enter the Champions League group stage with incredible momentum behind them, the likes of which we haven’t seen in recent memory.
Our last appearance in the group stage saw Steven Gerrard dropped from a team at the Bernabeu and the club exiting to the angry and exhaustive groans of its supporters.
An attacking force as explosive as Roberto Firmino, Mane, Coutinho and Salah, should be capable of not only producing results, but they will be likely to score obscene amounts of goals while doing so. If they can find their form now, when we have yet to leave August, the possibilities for the 2017/18 season are endless.
And so, feel free to dream. Feel free to let go of the anxiety left over from the Coutinho saga, and embrace the impossible task ahead of us.
The sky is not only the limit for this team, but it is also the aim. Deadline deals or not, Liverpool are back in European football and will be challenging toward the top of the table yet again, so enjoy it while you can.
