Gomez relishing Champions League bow
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has spoken of how he is relishing the chance to make his Champions League bow on Wednesday night.
The Reds take on Sevilla in their first group stage game of the competition, having comprehensively swept aside Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim over two legs in the play-off round.
Gomez, along with his manager Jurgen Klopp, addressed the media ahead of Wednesday’s game on Tuesday evening, and expressed his excitement ahead of the meeting.
As quoted by Liverpool’s official club website, Gomez was in confident mood ahead of the game.
That’s what you aspire for [when] you come to a club like this. It’s the level that everyone knows the club should be at and playing at.
For me, personally, it’s something I’ve always dreamed of as a kid and just to be part of the club going into a competition like this is special.
The England Under-21 international has featured prominently in Klopp’s plans at the start of the season, with both him and Trent Alexander-Arnold taking advantage of the lack of defensive depth in Liverpool’s squad.
Champions League nights are always special, especially at Anfield. So hopefully it’s the start of a good campaign for us. I think it’ll have a different feel because it’s the start of the group stage and we know that it’s a massive game – we’re actually in the Champions League now.
Whether or not Gomez will start against Sevilla remains to be seen, but he’ll be chomping at the bit ahead of his first ever Champions League night at Anfield.
I think it’s going to be a great atmosphere and hopefully it’ll be a good result as well.
