Liverpool Player Ratings: Sevilla (A)
So in typical Liverpool fashion, the Reds gave away a three-goal lead in Seville on Tuesday night. This isn’t a match report so I will summarise: the Reds were really good and ruthlessly went 0-3 up then Albie Moreno decided to become Albie Moreno again.
In the context of the group, a draw is actually quite a good result for Liverpool but the concession of a three-goal lead is so deflating and hopefully will mean Liverpool get a reaction against Chelsea now. Here’s how I rated the players:
LORIS KARIUS – 7
Commanded his area well and mades a world class save from Nolito at 0-1. Could possibly do more for their equaliser – may seem a little harsh as it comes through a body of players.
JOE GOMEZ – 8
Our best defender on the night. Won his tackles and looked assured. Not at fault for any of the goals. Wasn’t great positionally for the Nolito chance meaning he had to dive in but overall he can be quite happy with his own performance.
DEJAN LOVREN – 7
Thought he was quite solid overall.
RAGNAR KLAVAN – 7
Same as Lovren.
ALBERTO MORENO – 2
The performance that none of us could help feeling was around the corner from Albie. After a superb start to the season, he lost his head and reverted to type. Absolutely no need to foul the player for the first and then takes a dreadful touch in the lead up to the second before giving away the penalty. Was hooked on 60 but it was too late. It was nice while it lasted.
JORDAN HENDERSON – 3
The captain was miles off the pace. Touch was poor and plenty of needless fouls conceded.
GINI WIJNALDUM – 4
Didn’t think he was too bad but the more I think about it, he’s in the side for his ball retention and link play and was he effective in either department? These away performances are now becoming a worry.
PHILIPPE COUTINHO – 6
Assists the assist for the first two goals from corners. Thought he was excellent in the first half but like the rest of them, barely touched it in the second.
SADIO MANE – 6
Definitely doesn’t look like he’s fit, quite surprised to see him start the last two matches. Seems reluctant to sprint. Missed a pretty good chance to put the game to bed at 2-3. All that said, what a beautiful header for his goal.
ROBERTO FIRMINO – 9
Superb performance and he looked like a proper number 9. The first goal is very good movement and finish, the third is simple but he makes it much better with the no-look. Did all the usual Bobby Firmino stuff too. Right up there in the top scorers stakes.
MO SALAH – 4
Pretty much marked out of it. Could have scored with the one opportunity he got first half and was hesitant with an effort in the second. Beautiful composure to slide in Emre Can which should have buried the match. I think we’ll allow Salah an off night.
SUBSTITUTES:
James Milner: Came on at left-back and sured things up massively. Massive decision for Jurgen on Saturday evening now.
Emre Can: Added a bit of solidity to the midfield. Messes up a guilt-edged chance to make it 2-4.
Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain: Did he touch it?
