Ronald Koeman has confirmed that Virgil van Dijk will be the new Netherlands captain.
The Netherlands are looking to get themselves back to the elite status that they held thorughout world football for decades and have hired ex-Everton and Southampton manager Koeman to lead them there.
One of Koeman’s first jobs as the new manager was to select a captain, and he’s chosen the Liverpool defender.
Van Dijk has only played 16 games for his country in his career but aged 26, he’s got plenty of time to earn a lot of caps and he’ll be hoping that he’ll win plenty of them with the honour of wearing the captain’s armband.
Van Dijk’s first game as skipper will be against England on Friday evening, where he culd face off against a few of his club teammates.
In fact, there’s a very good chance that Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson could be the man leading out England in Amsterdam for the friendly fixture.
