Liverpool vs Roma Head to Head: How have the Reds fared against Roma?

Liverpool will face AS Roma for the sixth time  when the Italians come to Anfield for the Champions League semi-final on Tuesday evening.

The first ever meeting of the two sides came in the fabled 1984 European Cup final at the Stadio Olympico. Phil Neal gave Liverpool the lead in the game before a Roberto Pruzzo equaliser sent the game to penalties.

This saw the birth of Bruce Grobbelaar’s legendary “wobbly legs” in the shoot-out. Francesco Graziani put his penalty over the bar before Alan Kennedy tucked his away to give Liverpool their fourth European Cup.

Liverpool would not face Roma again until 2001 in the fourth round of the UEFA Cup. A Michael Owen brace in the away leg saw Liverpool take a 2-0 lead back to Merseyside.  Roma won the second leg 1-0, with the goal coming from Gianni Guigou, but Liverpool progressed and would go on to win the competition with a crazy 5-4 win over Alaves in the final.

The two clubs met again the year after in the second Group Stage of the Champions League.

After a goalless draw at the Stadio Olympico in the first meeting, Liverpool needed a win at Anfield to progress ahead of the Italians on Head to Head recor.

Liverpool were awarded a penalty after just seven minutes and Jari Litmanen coolly slid the ball into the bottom left to give the Reds a vital lead. Progression was confirmed for Liverpool as Emile Heskey nodded in a superb ball in from Danny Murphy to double the lead.

Liverpool will be hoping that their good run against Roma will continue on Tuesday evening!
