Joe Gomez has been left “devastated” at his treatment from some England fans on Thursday night.

The 22-year-old was booed when he entered the field with 20 minutes remaining in the Three Lions’ 7-0 win over Montenegro, following his bust-up with Raheem Sterling earlier in the week.

Some of Gomez’s teammates believe he was booed during the warm-up, but it was heard more when he came on later in the evening.

The other England players are believed to have been left “stunned and angry” by the behaviour towards Gomez.

Gareth Southgate spent time with the centre-back once the game had finished, in order to check on his well-being.

It must be stressed that plenty of England fans inside Wembley applauded Gomez when he came on, but there is a section who have disgraced themselves.

Booing a player who represents your country is never good, but to do it to an innocent party if outrageous.

It is common knowledge that Gomez did nothing wrong with regards to the Sterling incident, receiving a scratch to the eye.

The Manchester City star took to Twitter to support his colleague on Thursday night, and rightly so.
