Former Premier League midfielder Andy Townsend has been lauding Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The 22-year-old has been in outstanding form in recent weeks, just in time to inspire the Reds to a third-place finish and with it a UEFA Champions League spot for next season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side won their final five games of the campaign, culminating with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace, with Alexander-Arnold rating 8.20 and 8.10 against Manchester United and Burnley respectively (Sofascore).

During commentary duty for Peacock Sport, Townsend, who played 215 times in the top-flight during his playing career, was full of praise for the Scouser.

Brilliant from Trent Alexander-Arnold. Lovely work. He’s played so well lately, this guy. He really has. I think when he’s at his best, he is the best [English right-back]. He’s such a good footballer.

Despite a remarkable upturn in form – perhaps since being dropped by England manager Gareth Southgate in March – reports, as cited by The Anfield Talk, have claimed the marauding full-back won’t be picked for the upcoming Euro 2020 tournament.

All told this season, Alexander-Arnold has scored twice and registered nine assists across 45 appearances in all competitions.

Whilst England not picking the Liverpool ace would benefit Klopp and the Reds, it’s hard to believe the national team won’t rue such a decision.

Having played an integral part in a side that has won the UEFA Champions League and Premier League previously, Alexander-Arnold’s recent form is more than sufficient to see the starlet make the squad.

Were the unthinkable to happen, an extended rest ahead of a full pre-season with Klopp at Kirkby would be ideal preparation for a huge 2021/22.
