Liverpool went into the international break with a morale-boosting 1-0 win against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
Most of their big guns are with their respective national teams, leaving Andoni Iraola with a limited group of players to work with.
Giovanni Leoni is close to returning to training for Liverpool, which is set to be a massive boost for the Spaniard.
However, if reports from The Athletic are to be believed, two youngsters have had the chance to endear themselves to the new manager.
James McConnell and Jayden Danns under the microscope for Liverpool
Jayden Danns has struggled with injuries in recent years, while McConnell’s development has stagnated after an underwhelming loan spell with Ajax.
However, both players are currently with the senior team, with McConnell even getting a chance during the Carabao Cup clash vs Tottenham.
And according to the aforementioned report, both players have been part of training in recent weeks, with Iraola getting a closer look at them as he continues to get to know his squad better.
An excerpt from the article reads, “Head coach Andoni Iraola is currently working with a skeleton squad made up of the few senior players not on duty with their countries, supplemented by under-21s and under-18s.
“He decided to keep the training schedule similar to previous weeks, with the exception of a few extra days off.
“Like the eight other managers and head coaches at new clubs in the Premier League this season, Iraola is keen to continue working on his philosophy with the squad, even if only a handful of first-teamers are around.
“Liverpool initially had 18 seniors on international duty so, back on Merseyside, the likes of Jayden Danns and James McConnell have had the chance to impress ahead of a period in which the first team will play 10 games in 27 days.”
Neither of them is expected to play a massive role in the Premier League, but the Spaniard has proved that he won’t be shy of throwing young players into the limelight if they work hard, so they could well get their chances between now and the end of the year if injuries pile up.
