Liverpool recently signed Joel Matip on a pre-contract basis and the defender will join the Reds in the summer when his deal at Schalke expires.
Liverpool have been known to dip into the free agent market in the past. Sometimes it has worked well, such as when we brought in Gary McAllister. Other times it’s worked out horrifically – Joe Cole anybody?
With many fans expecting, or in some cases hoping, for departures, there are still some other players available on free transfers who Liverpool could also bring in if they wish to save the majority of their transfer kitty to spend elsewhere.
So, who are the potential free agents that the Reds could, and maybe should, look at speaking to ahead of potential summer moves?
I’ve taken a look at some players we the Reds should consider taking a look at.
Despite Jon Flanagan recently signing a new deal, Liverpool could probably do some depth at full-back.
Gregory van der Wiel is an experienced international fullback and at 28, he is still in his prime.
He’s unlikely to stay at PSG after a recent falling out with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, one that saw him storm out of the stadium.
He may have a fiery temper, but Jurgen Klopp could be the manager to get the best out him.
There could even be a possibility of Nathaniel Clyne playing on the left and Van der Wiel playing on the right.
Caner Erkin - Left-back - Fenerbahce SK
We mentioned earlier how Liverpool lack right-back cover, well the same can be said at left-back too. Alberto Moreno is the clear starter, but his backup next season is still set to be Brad Smith who is inexperienced.
Another option, Joe Gomez, looks more of a centre-back.
After that it’s Jose Enrique, who is, well, Jose Enrique.
Erkin is a solid, experienced defender who is more than capible of filling in if required.
Sofiane Feghouli - Winger/Forward - Valencia
The Algerian is another player who can play anywhere across the front three although he looks to be better when deployed on the right.
At just 26-years-old, Feghouli can still improve, but would provide Jurgen Klopp with another forward option.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic - Striker - PSG
Ok, I know he’s 34 and I know he doesn’t really fit, but it’d be bloody great to see Zlatan strolling around Anfield doing Zlatan things, wouldn’t it?
Added to the sheer boss-ness of him just being Zlatan Ibrahimovic, he still offers a huge threat to opposition defenders and his goalscoring record speaks for itself.
