Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona have given up their pursuit of Brazilian Philippe Coutinho after Liverpool refused to sell the playmaker and have targeted Tottenham Hotspur attacker Christian Eriksen as an alternative, according to a report by the Independent.
The Catalan club were hoping to sign Coutinho this summer but Liverpool released a statement this morning clearly stating that the Brazilian is not for sale, no matter what sum of money is offered.
Liverpool’s resolute stance has led Barcelona to identify other targets and the name of Eriksen has been mentioned.
The Spanish club have already tried to make contact with representatives of the Danish playmaker and see him as a long term replacement for the ageing Andres Iniesta.
The coaching staff at Barcelona admire Eriksen’s passing ability and believe that he has the correct style of link-up play that suits the Barcelona style.
There were fears that Coutinho would attempt to force a move to Barcelona but the club have made it clear that he is not going to leave Liverpool this summer.
The statement, which was published on the club’s official website, included: “The club’s definitive stance is that no offers for Philippe will be considered and he will remain a member of Liverpool Football Club when the summer window closes.”
Barcelona are desperately trying to sign a big name before the transfer window closes after losing Neymar to PSG for a world record fee of £200m.
