Whether Emre Can will still be a Liverpool player next season remains to be seen, but for now, the German midfielder is one of the Reds’ most consistent performers this season and that’s been the case for the last 18 months or so.

Liverpool currently sit seven points back of the Premier League leaders Manchester City after just seven games and the finger of blame has largely been pointed at the Reds’ poor defence.

After failing to sign Virgil van Dijk, Jurgen Klopp opted to not pursue any other centre-backs and so far it’s not worked out as the Liverpool back four looks just as brittle as it ever has.

Speaking to Sport Bild, Can states that it’s a fact that Liverpool have been leaking goals defensively, but if they score goals then no one will care about their bad defence.

It’s definitely a fact that we have recently defended badly and conceded too many goals. But I still believe that when we scored goals, we won the games. Then nobody was speaking about the defence.

Linked with a January move to Juventus with his contract expiring next summer, Can also has other suitors in the Premier League from the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.

The Germany international goes on to comment on the manager’s approach to poor results with the team, saying how Klopp hasn’t really addressed the team’s defensive woes and that he continues to reassure the Liverpool squad that they’ve just been unlucky in recent games as opposed to playing poorly.

The coach himself says we didn’t play badly. We almost dominated the opponents in all games and were the better team. Jurgen Klopp is convinced that only the necessary luck is missing to return to winning.

Liverpool have won just three of their seven Premier League games this far and have also dropped crucial points in the Champions League from winning positions as a result of their suspect rear-guard.
