It’s been a while since Liverpool beat Man United in a league game. Whilst the Reds had success in Europe against United, they have lost four and drew two of their last six Premier League games against them.
Ahead of this weekend’s game, I’ve taken a look back at the last time the Reds beat United in the league, which was in March 2014 when they won 3-0 at Old Trafford.
This game further demonstrated the title credentials that Brendan Rodgers’ side had, despite the challenge many thought they’d be confronted with prior to kick off.
Instead, Liverpool made a mockery of David Moyes’ Manchester United – the win felt even sweeter as United looked enviously up the table from seventh, behind our neighbours from across Stanley Park.
Steven Gerrard struck twice from the penalty spot, however, he missed the opportunity to make it a hat-trick of penalties when his third crashed against the post.
No matter though; Luis Suarez had the last, scornful – from a Man United fan’s point of view – say on a day to remember at Old Trafford.
I’ve taken a look back at the team from that day to see where they are now:
Goalkeeper: Simon Mignolet
Mignolet remains one of the few senior squad members still standing from that 3-0 mauling. He is currently facing competition between the sticks by Loris Karius.
Right Back: Glen Johnson
Johnson left the club in July 2015 to sign for Stoke.
Centre Back: Martin Skrtel
Skrtel moved for pastures new to sign for Turkish side Fenerbahce.
Centre Back: Daniel Agger
Club legend Agger left the club at the end of the 2013/14 season to sign for the side where his career began – at Brondby in Denmark. He has now retired.
Left Back: Jon Flanagan
Local lad Flanagan began to flourish in the Liverpool side that nearly won the title in 2013/14 but injury derailed much of his career at the Reds.
He is still at Anfield but he’s finding game time hard to come by.
Centre Midfield: Steven Gerrard
Gerrard remains one of Liverpool’s most iconic players of all time, who scored two of the Reds’ three goals that day. Having left for LA Galaxy at the end of the 2014/15 season, he is back in a youth coaching capacity at Liverpool.
Centre Midfield: Joe Allen
Allen won the second penalty that Gerrard duly converted – he, along with ex-Reds teammate Johnson, are currently plying their trade at Stoke City.
Centre Midfield: Jordan Henderson
Henderson remains in Liverpool’s XI to this day and has taken over the reins as captain from Gerrard.
Right Wing: Raheem Sterling
Sterling exited the club in favour of a £50m move to Man City – which split opinion among many having been one of Europe’s brightest talents.
Striker: Luis Suarez
Suarez scored a very impressive return with 69 goals in 110 appearances before leaving to Barcelona in July 2014. Liverpool struggled immediately after his departure.
Left Wing: Daniel Sturridge
Sturridge remains in the side but has fallen down the pecking order due to injuries.
Substitute: Brad Jones
Jones left the club in August 2015 – he’s now playing at Feyenoord, who he helped win a league title.
Substitute: Iago Aspas
Aspas was expected to be the ace card that would complement Liverpool’s attacking duo of Suarez and Sturridge in the 2013/14 season – instead he proved to be one of the most disappointing signings in the Rodgers’ reign but is now back at Celta Vigo and his performances there have seen him gain international recognition from Spain.
Substitute: Philippe Coutinho
Coutinho remains at the club, even though he didn’t start at Old Trafford. The Brazilian has gone on to be a vital asset in Liverpool’s attacking trio.
Substitute: Victor Moses
Moses endured a virtually non-existent spell at the club, having been brought on loan in the summer of 2013. He contributed little to Liverpool’s attack and is now playing with Chelsea again, where he features regularly as a wing-back.
Substitute: Mamadou Sakho
Sakho was sent to the wilderness to the dismay of some Liverpool supporters by manager Jurgen Klopp following his misdemeanours. He’s been sold to Crystal Palace.
Substitute: Aly Cissokho
Cissokho only made six appearances in the senior team whilst on loan at the Reds in 2013/14. He is currently at Turkish Süper Lig club Yeni Malatyaspor.
Substitute: Lucas Leiva
Experienced veteran Lucas Leiva left Liverpool in the summer to join Napoli.
