Gini Wijnaldum has revealed that he turned down the chance to join Tottenham in order to complete a move to Anfield.
Speaking to the Telegraph, the Dutchman revealed that he went as far as meeting Mauricio Pochettino to discuss a move to White Hart Lane as the two sides prepare to meet on Saturday.
I met Pochettino when I left Newcastle. I just felt Liverpool wanted to come to an agreement quickly. Tottenham have shown over the years the quality of their players and manager.
He joined the Reds back in 2016 in a deal worth a reported £25 million following Newcastle’s relegation from the Championship.
Wijnaldum was a hit with the fans at Newcastle and it did not take long for the Liverpool fans to appreciate the player in a similar vein.
There were some question marks over his future at the club this summer.
He was linked with moves to Turkey following the arrivals of both Naby Keita and Fabinho, with concerns being raised about the level of game time he would get this season.
