Liverpool blew their opportunity to go seven points clear at the top by only managing a 1-1 draw against Leicester City at Anfield. Sadio Mane scored the goal for the home side and Harry Maguire equalised for the visitors.
In a fast start, the Reds got the lead inside three minutes when some good play on the left-hand side of the box led to Mane getting possession in a tiny bit of space. The Senegalese star then did well to conjure a low shot towards the goal to give his team the lead.
The Foxes were a bit lucky to not go down by man when Maguire fouled the aforementioned goalscorer when it looked like he was the last defender. But, referee Martin Atkinson only gave a yellow card.
Then Maguire scored the equalising goal for the visitors when during the second phase of a free-kick, the offside line of Liverpool was all over the place and the centre-back had an easy tap in at the far post.
Jurgen Klopp’s men should have had a penalty when Naby Keita was clipped by Ricardo Pereira, but the referee didn’t deem it as a spot kick offence.
At the end of the day, it is two points dropped for the hosts, and they are now five points clear at the top.
Here’s how we rated their performance:
Alisson - 5
Took chances in possession which didn’t come off at times. Couldn’t do much to save the goal.
Jordan Henderson - 6
The makeshift right-back did well but it was shown why he is not a regular in that position.
Joel Matip - 6
Did well in central defence. Couldn’t have done much to stop Maguire from scoring.
Virgil van Dijk - 6
The Dutchman was solid at the back, as per.
Andy Robertson - 5
Gave a silly free-kick away that led to the Leicester equaliser. Wasn’t at his best.
Georginio Wijnaldum - 5
The Dutchman started the game well but slowed down after the break.
Naby Keita - 6
The Guinean was slightly livelier today and should have won a penalty. Subbed off.
Xherdan Shaqiri - 4
Just not his day. Didn’t really do much. Subbed off.
Roberto Firmino - 5
Started the game well but became sloppy after the break. Subbed off in the latter stages.
Sadio Mane - 8
Scored the only goal for Liverpool and by far their best player.
Mohamed Salah - 4
Playing the Egyptian centrally wasn’t a wise choice against Maguire. He was non-existent as a result.
(Sub) Adam Lallana - 4
Couldn’t do much to change the game.
(Sub) Fabinho - 5
Brought on to solidify the midfield and he did that.
(Sub) Daniel Sturridge - N/A
No time to impact.
