Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is one of the “unsung” heroes of the current side and Reds legend Phil Thompson believes he should be the first player on Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet.
Wijnaldum has impressed for Liverpool this season amidst competition from summer signings Fabinho and Naby Keita, and the Dutchman has been a key part of Klopp’s plans this campaign.
Liverpool are currently second on goal difference in the Premier League following last weekend’s 3-0 victory over Bournemouth, and host Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday.
Wijnaldum recovered from illness to put in a fine display against the Cherries, scoring Liverpool’s second of the game with a brilliant lob over Artur Boruc, and Liverpool icon Thompson spoke of the midfielders importance in the side after praising his goal against Bournemouth.
It was just quite sensational. He’s one of the unsung heroes of this Liverpool side.
I’ve told a lot of people, we had one player Ray Kennedy, fans were forever complaining about him, but we knew how good he was. Wijnaldum is the same and he should be the first name on the team sheet. He possesses great knowledge and awareness of where he is on the pitch. He’s a properly gifted player in more ways than the silky skills of the guys up front.
