Liverpool produced another great European performance to beat Bayern Munich 3-1 at the Allianz Arena and go through the last eight of the Champions League.
Sadio Mane scored a brace, while Virgil van Dijk netted the other for the Reds. Joel Matip scored the own goal for the Bavarians, in what was the only negative point of the night for the visitors.
Around the 26th minute mark, van Dijk delivered an accurate long ball which was beautifully taken down by Mane. The Senegalese star then had the composure to make a sharp to bamboozle two Bayern defenders and the keeper and chip the ball into an empty net.
The home side levelled things up six minutes before half-time when a Serge Gnabry cross was turned into his own net by Matip.
Liverpool restored the lead 21 minutes from time when James Milner’s corner found the head of van Dijk, and the Dutchman leapt the highest to score.
The icing on the cake was put when Salah picked out Mane with a glorious cross in the 84th minute. The latter just glanced his header in.
All in all, a fantastic performance from the Reds who deserved to go through.
Here’s how we rate the Liverpool players:
Alisson - 7
Couldn’t have done much to save that own goal. Didn’t have to make a save and was good with the ball at his feet.
Trent Alexander-Arnold - 7
Trent did his job well, considering Bayern targeted him with diagonal balls towards Frank Ribery. The Englishman needed help at times but held up well, when required.
Joel Matip - 8
He scored the own goal was immense throughout. His performances has been improved massively in the past few weeks.
Virgil van Dijk - 9
Another imperious performance from the Dutchman. Scored the all-important second Liverpool goal and a giant at the back.
Andy Robertson - 7
Could have done to track the run of Gnabry for the first goal. Other than that, the Scotsman was good. Shame that he received a yellow card so late in the game, meaning he will the first leg of the quarter-finals.
Georginio Wijnaldum - 7
He was a little bit out of depth in the first half but came back well after the break.
Jordan Henderson - N/A
Got a knock very early in the game and couldn’t continue. Replaced by Fabinho.
James Milner - 8
The experience of Milner came to the fore in the Liverpool midfield. He was simply brilliant. Subbed off for Adam Lallana later.
Mohamed Salah - 7
Could have done better with a chance he got when the score was 2-1. But the Egyptian made amends with a lovely outside of the boot cross for Mane to head the third.
Roberto Firmino - 8
Worked so hard off the ball to not allow Bayern to play through the lines. Subbed off for Divock Origi later.
Sadio Mane - 10
His first touch and turn and chip for the first goal was world class. The Senegalese star was a threat all-game and got his second with a glancing header later on.
(SUB) Fabinho - 8
Came on for Henderson very early into the piece and produced a world class defensive midfield performance. Booked in the first half.
(SUB) Divock Origi - 6
Came on later and was involved in the build-up of the third goal.
(SUB) Adam Lallana- 5
Came on very late to see the game out.
