Mauricio Pellegrino
You may recognise this name – he was Southampton’s manager last season but he was once a player and a fairly decent one.
Pellegrino began his career in his native Argetina with Velez Sarsfield but joined Barcelona on loan in 1998.
The centre back only played 23 times for Barca but didn’t earn a permanent deal and instead joined Valencia in 1999.
Rafa Benitez brought him to Liverpool in 2005 but he failed to impress in that season and after only 13 appearances he was released.
Jari Litmanen
After starting his career in his native Finland, Litmanen found his way to Ajax where he became a club legend.
His form in the Netherlands earned him a move to Barcelona in 1999 but he never quite found his feet in Spain and only played 21 times over one season.
Gerard Houllier brought him to Merseyside in 2001 but like at Barcelona couldn’t really get going at the club and after nine goals in 43 matches, he was given permission to move on after one and a half seasons.
Boudewijn Zenden
Louis van Gaal brought Boudewijn Zenden to Barcelona as part of a large Dutch contingent in 1998 and helped them the La Liga that year.
After van Gaal left the club his opportunities dried up and he signed for Chelsea in 2001 after 64 games and two goals in Spain.
Two spells at Middlesbrough came from Chelsea and he signed for Liverpool in 2005 but injuries stunted his career with the Reds and he only played 23 times before being sold to Marseille.
Luis Garcia
Garcia began his career with Barcelona playing mainly for their B team but after four loan spells and without a single first-team appearance he signed for Atletico Madrid in 2002.
He only spent a year in Madrid and Barcelona bought the winger back thanks to a buy-back clause. He went on to make 25 appearances and scored on four of those occasions.
Rafa Benitez signed him for Liverpool in 2004 for £6 million and he became a fan favourite on Merseyside. He was a part of the squad that lifted the Champions League trophy in 2005.
He played 77 times in the Premier League scoring 18 times but was sold to Atletico Madrid in 2007.
Javier Mascherano
Arriving in England in 2006 in what was a controversial transfer to West Ham, Mascherano signed for Liverpool in 2007 a year later.
He became a first team regular in a strong midfield in the late 2000s for Liverpool but after three years and over 100 appearances, he signed for Barcelona for £17.5 million.
The Argentinian mainly played as a central defender for Barca and enjoyed a successful and trophy-filled career in Spain.
He won La Liga five times, the Copa del Rey five times and the Champions League twice before he signed for Hebei China Fortune after over 300 games for Barcelona.
Pepe Reina
Just like Garcia, Reina started his career at Barcelona, but he made his debut in 2000 and over two seasons made 30 appearances.
He was sold to Villareal in 2002 and eventually to Liverpool in 2005 where he took over from Jersey Dudek as the club’s number one.
Reina became one of the best keepers in the Premier League and a firm fan favourite in Liverpool raking up over 300 appearances in all competitions.
After the signing of Simon Mignolet by Brendan Rodgers, Reina’s first team chances became limited and he was loaned to Napoli in 2013 and then sold to Bayern Munich a year later.
Luis Suarez
The Uruguayan forward signed for the Reds in 2011 from Ajax for £22.8million and became a star and the clubs’ best player during his time in Liverpool.
He scored 69 times in 110 Premier League games but ended is career on Merseyside with a bitter note after his second instance of biting he was sold to Barcelona in 2014 for £64.98million.
Taking Lionel Messi’s spot upfront, forcing him on the right wing, Suarez proved his quality and has scored 131 times from 163 games in La Liga at the time of writing.
Suarez has won the league four times with Barcelona, the Copa del Rey four times and the Champions League once.
Philippe Coutinho
The most recent player to sign for Barcelona from Liverpool, Coutinho came to Merseyside in January 2013 from Inter Milan and after a slow start, he became a real star in a red shirt.
Coutinho took Suarez’s mantle as Liverpool’s game-winner and after 152 Premier League games and 41 goals, the Brazilian got his wishes and earned a £105 million move to the Spanish giants last January.
He has scored 13 times in 51 games for Barca and is rumoured to be unsettled and has even been linked to a transfer back to Liverpool.
At only 26 years of age, Coutinho still has time to really reach his potential and could prove to be a threat down Barca’s left wing tonight at Camp Nou.
