Pique blames Liverpool defeat for Copa del Rey failure
Gerard Pique has claimed if it wasn’t for Liverpool’s shocking Champions League comeback, Barcelona would have won the treble this season.
After winning 3-0 at the Nou Camp in the semi-final first leg, the Spanish side had one foot in the final… that was until they went and lost 4-0 at Anfield a week later.
In their latest blunder, Barcelona were beaten 2-1 by Valencia in the Copa del Rey final last night but Pique, cited by Empire of the Kop, thinks it would be so much different if Ernesto Valverde’s men got through that night on Merseyside.
I believe that if we had gotten through at Liverpool, we would have won the treble – that is my feeling. We would have come here [to the Copa del Rey final] with a different mood, and I’m convinced we would have won the Champions League final, but that is football. We are really, really hurting.
The La Liga champions will certainly be back next season though with a fresh squad including Frenkie de Jong and the impending arrival of his Ajax team-mate Matthijs de Ligt.
You can only feel like Pique has a point though, with the same happening to Paris Saint-Germain after their comeback loss to Manchester United earlier in the competition.
Liverpool will be vying to make that jaw-dropping comeback worth it in Madrid next weekend though, with Tottenham Hotspur awaiting in the final.
