Liverpool are weighing up a shock swoop for Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy this summer.
According to The Mirror, Liverpool are interested in signing McCarthy to replace Simon Mignolet ahead of next season.
The report claims that Mignolet is set to leave Liverpool in the coming weeks after he spent the entirety of last season on the bench behind Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson.
McCarthy did start the campaign as Southampton’s number one, but was eventually dropped for former Norwich and Manchester City shot-stopper Angus Gunn – who is now their current number one.
Liverpool are said to have been lining up a move for McCarthy last summer before they signed Alisson from Roma for a – at the time – world-record fee for a goalkeeper.
The Reds have signed Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne, Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren, Virgil Van Dijk and Sadio Mane from Southampton in recent years – for a combined £173m.
Goalkeepers Liverpool could target
Liverpool have been linked with a move for the goalkeeper recent relegated with Cardiff.
Liverpool could target McCarthy’s teammate at Southampton and go for Fraser Forster.
The young Fiorentina goalkeeper is a top talent and would be an excellent signing for Liverpool.
Adrian is available on a free transfer next month and could be a solid back up to Alisson.
