Lonergan to train with Liverpool on US pre-season tour
Former Leeds United and Preston North End goalkeeper Andrew Lonergan will be training with Liverpool during their pre-season tour of the United States, as reported in the Liverpool Echo.
The 35-year-old will travel Stateside with the European champions after being released by Middlesbrough this summer.
Liverpool are currently missing four goalkeepers – Alisson, Caoimhin Kelleher, Vitezslav Jaros and Kamil Grabara – due to either holiday or injury which has called on Lonergan’s emergency arrival.
Alisson and Grabara are yet to return to training, with the former recently playing a central role in Brazil’s Copa America triumph and now enjoying a much-deserved break from football.
Pre-season offers a great opportunity to give youngsters game time, but both Kelleher and Jaros have picked up untimely injuries which make them serious doubts for the rest of the Reds’ warm-up fixtures.
Lonergan started at Preston, coming through the ranks and making 232 first-team appearances before going on the represent Leeds United, Bolton Wanderers, Wolves and Middlesbrough.
