There is nothing denying the fact that the EPL 2018-19 was a memorable season for the Reds. Despite narrowly missing out on the Premier League title to their close rivals Manchester City, Liverpool recovered in quick time to beat Tottenham and emerged as the European champions for the sixth time. That win was a big one for Jurgen Klopp, who finally laid his hands on the Champions League trophy after getting beaten six times in various finals, including thrice with the Reds alone.
This time around, Liverpool are one of the hot favourites to go all the way and win the English Premier League 2019-20 season. People are heavily backing them in the betting market too. If you’re someone who’s interested in betting on soccer, you’d be able to make a lot of sense of the 9/4 odds being offered for the Liverpool to emerge as champions. They are marginally behind Manchester City, who are going at odds of 8/13. Tottenham are third, going at 16/1.
Following are the 3 problems that Liverpool and Klopp will need to tackle immediately before the start of the new EPL season next month.
It goes without saying that Liverpool were amazing last season and they had a phenomenal 97 points to show for their effort. This was only bettered by Manchester City, who took the league championship with 98 points. The fact that Liverpool lost only one game in the entire league season shows how impressive they were throughout. Having said that, they must keep up their intensity and mentality going into the next season. City clearly showed that they are ready to capitalise on the slipups and mistakes of other teams, including Liverpool. That’s the reason why they recovered from a seven-point deficit to win the title in the end. The Reds can’t get complacent and allow the same to happen once again.
The Liverpool squad has enough depth now, something which was sorely missing in earlier seasons, particularly before Klopp came on board. That being said, important players like Virgil Van Dijk, Allison or any of the three strikers getting injured at this point of time would be a huge blow for Klopp. These players constitute the spine of the Liverpool team and them contributing in every game is the reason why Reds are strong contenders for the title. If Liverpool do sign up new players this summer, it will be quite interesting to see who is brought on board!
There was plenty of scrutiny going on Klopp’s team when they were clearly leading the title race last season during the Christmas period. Fans, media and everybody else were suggesting that it was definitely their year. The fact that Liverpool became the only team to fail to win the league despite being at the top of the table at Christmas didn’t help matters much. It has added lots of pressure on the team to go and finish the unfinished business of last year. Although Klopp will constantly back his team, the players are bound to feel the weight of expectations.
