Liverpool had to grind and they did exactly that to see off Watford 2-0 at Anfield and keep their remarkable season going.
Mohamed Salah scored both the goals for the Reds, who had to thank Alisson for a few good saves as they kept their first Anfield clean sheet of the season.
After a scrappy start to the game, Watford created the first big chance of the game in the 36th minute, but Abdoulaye Doucoure completely fluffed his lines in front of goal.
A minute later, Liverpool broke from the corner and Mane found Salah one-on-one with the defender. The Egyptian then cut back on his right foot to curl his effort into the back of the net.
The visitors had opportunities to equalise in the second half, but Alisson made a couple of crucial saves to keep his clean sheet.
Then, in the 90th minute, Salah scored from an outrageous flick through Christian Kabasele’s legs to settle the matters.
Mane scored in the 50th minute, but VAR ruled that out because the Senegal international’s hip was offside. Make of that what you want!
Here’s how we rated the Liverpool players after this game.
Alisson - 8
The Brazilian international kept Liverpool’s lead intact in the second half with two very good saves. His catching and passing from the back was good too.
Trent Alexander-Arnold - 7
Some of his passing was very good as per usual. He defended well against a dangerous Gerard Deulofeu. His corners were substandard though.
Joe Gomez - 7
Back in central defence, Gomez defended well. He used his pace to deny Ismaila Sarr once. However, some of his passing was lackadaisical at times.
Virgil van Dijk - 7
Not his best day, but the Dutchman still did enough to warrant a clean sheet. His casual back pass almost scored for Watford and had few difficult moments against the burly Troy Deeney.
James Milner - 6
Started at left-back, Milner did well on the ball, but his off the ball work at the back wasn’t good enough.
Switched to midfield after the hour mark and looked better there.
Jordan Henderson - 7
The captain had to do a lot of work in midfield due to change in the system and he did them well. Some of his passing was strayed at times, but that was in keeping with the scrappy nature of the game.
Georginio Wijnaldum - 5
The Dutchman was decent on the ball, but he was getting overrun. Pulled his hamstring around the hour mark and had to be subbed off.
Xherdan Shaqiri - 5
Shaqiri was close to non-existent in the first half and not much changed after the break as well. He did put a great cross for Mane to score, only for VAR to chalk it off. Subbed off in the 70th minute.
Roberto Firmino - 5
Another day where Firmino seemed to try harder than usual and got his touches wrong more often than not. He is in a tough run of form at the moment, something that has to change soon.
Got subbed off for Divock Origi late on.
Sadio Mane - 7
Mane was a threat all game long, assisted the Salah goal, scored a great header only to be ruled out by VAR and was involved in the second goal as well.
Mohamed Salah - 9
Apart from two great finishes from his right foot, Salah was a threat throughout the game through the centre of Watford defence.
Referees need to protect the Egyptian more though because it seems as if Premier League defenders are allowed to rugby tackle him as much as they want.
(SUB) Andy Robertson - 6
Came on at the hour mark and brought more stability to the left-back position as expected.
(SUB) Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 6
Came on for the last 20 minutes to shore up the right-hand side of midfield. He did that well and was involved in the build-up of the second goal.
(SUB) Divock Origi - 5
The Belgian got an inadvertent assist for the Salah goal after misplacing his shot on goal.
