Liverpool continued their remarkable start to the season on Sunday, beating rivals Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield to go 16 points clear at the top of the Premier League, with a game in hand.
Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah scored the goals for the Reds, proving to be enough for them to get the victory.
After a fast start, Jurgen Klopp’s men took the lead in the 14th minute when Van Dijk headed home from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s fizzed corner.
Liverpool had their second soon after when Roberto Firmino curled in an effort, only for VAR to chalk the goal off because there was a supposed foul by Van Dijk on David de Gea in the build-up.
The Reds kept pushing for that second goal and missed a lot of chances, especially glaring ones from Sadio Mane and Salah.
Eventually, after a few nervy moments, the European champions clinched the victory in the 92nd minute, when Alisson pumped the ball long for Salah to run on to and score, sending Anfield into a frenzy.
This was a proper statement win over their rivals for Liverpool, who are now 30 points ahead of United, having played one game fewer.
Here’s how we rated the players after the game…
Alisson - 9
Alisson made few routine saves and magically assisted the Salah goal later on to seal the win.
A 100-metre run and knee slide warranted an extra mark as well!
Trent Alexander-Arnold - 8
Alexander-Arnold assisted the first goal and looked very good on the ball, despite not quite hitting top gear.
Defensively, apart from the odd glitch, he was also impressive.
Joe Gomez - 8
Apart from a couple of iffy situations, Gomez was solid at the back and deserved the clean sheet.
What a run of form he is in.
Virgil van Dijk - 9
An imperious header to give his team the lead was a good start.
After that, the Dutchman commanded the back-line and won some important headers to help record yet another clean-sheet.
Andy Robertson - 6
This was not Robertson’s best game, by his highest standards.
His deliveries weren’t good and he was caught out defensively a couple of times as well.
Jordan Henderson - 10
A proper captain’s performance on a big occasion.
Henderson worked hard, passed the ball well, defended immaculately and smashed the woodwork with his effort.
Deserved Man of the Match.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 6
The midfielder had moments where he looked good, but also had situations where he showed his negative side as well.
For that reason, Klopp substituted him after the hour mark.
Gini Wijnaldum - 9
A beast of a performance from Wijnaldum in a big game – bit of a theme this.
He was very good on the ball and covered so much ground off it to help the team – he is a priceless asset.
Mohamed Salah - 8
Missed a very good chance at the start of the second half, but that didn’t deter him from scoring the important goal later on.
Overall, he was a threat to the United defence throughout the afternoon.
Roberto Firmino - 7
Firmino scored a superb goal that was ruled out by VAR – other than that, he worked hard, linked the play up and did well overall.
Substituted late on when Liverpool felt a bit of a pressure from the visitors.
Sadio Mane - 7
Mane missed a couple of very good chances, but his work off the ball was immense again.
He remained a threat as long as he was on the pitch.
(SUB) Adam Lallana - 6
Gave some silly fouls away, but helped control the midfield better than Oxlade-Chamberlain.
(SUB) Fabinho- 6
Made some important clearances after coming on to help relieve the pressure.
(SUB) Divock Origi - 6
Helped the team defend late on.
