On This Day in Liverpool’s history – March 24th
As one can probably imagine with the club the size of Liverpool, with a rich and illustrious history, you can look at pretty much any date in the calendar and look back at that day in years gone by, and you’ll find something Reds’ related to reminisce about.
Here are some of the most note-worthy Reds-related topics that have happened on March 24th in years gone by.
Matches
The last time Liverpool played on March 24th was in 2012, and it was certainly a game to gorget for the Reds! Goals from Shaun Maloney and Gary Caldwell, either side of a Luis Suarez strike, gave Wigan a 2-1 win, the first victory they had ever had at Anfield.
Back in 2002, a very, very late goal from Vladimír Smicer, who turned home an Emile Heskey’s cross, earned the Reds three vital points in the title race.
Debut
In the aforementioned loss to Wigan, Raheem Sterling came on as a late substitute, replacing Dirk Kuyt. Sterling went on to play 129 times for the Reds, scoring 23 goals, before he rather controversially left to join Manchester City.
Birthday
In 1997, Jordan Rossiter was born. A lot was expected of Rossiter, who scored on his Reds’ debut in a League Cup tie against Middlesbrough. However, injuries hampered the midfielder and he left to join Rangers in 2016.
Transfers
On this day in 2001, both Dani Pacheco and Brad Jones left the Reds on loan. Pacheco moved to Norwich City on loan, whilst Jones moved to Derby County on a temporary basis.
