The Richest Club Owners in The Premier League
The Premier League is a global product bought into by millions of fans across the world and generates a lot of revenue for teams through ticket sales and TV deals. But owning one of these clubs requires you to be wealthy in the first place.
Some Premier League club owners are much wealthier than others. Liverpool’s owner John Henry sits around the mid-table mark in terms of wealth, showing that money does not always buy success. Although he is being urged to splash the cash on Leroy Sane this summer, nevertheless, having an exceptional manager and intimidating stadium atmosphere can make up for a lack of premium financial edge, which Liverpool have proven in the last 12 months.
John Henry is worth around the same amount of money as Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley who is known not to be ambitious with his club at all and would rather spend his money in other places or perhaps at some of the most luxurious casinos in the world. It was once reported that he lost a significant sum of money while out at a casino with Alan Pardew, the first team’s manager at the time.
So, if these well-known owners are not the richest Premier League owners, then who is?
#3: Stan Kroenke
Stan Kroenke is a savvy business mind and a sports fan, also owning many USA teams. He married the heiress of Walmart and then began his own real estate firm that cleverly built all of their properties close to Walmart stores. His recent signing of Nikolas Pepe in 2019 was the most amount of money he paid for a player as owner.
#2: Roman Abramovich
Mr Abramovich changed the face of English football when he bought Chelsea FC. This gentleman was the first big buyer of a Premier League club and with it came a flurry of big-name signings, which helped them win many trophies in the following years. He made his money from the oil industry and now invests in the steel industry. He also owns the biggest yacht in the world.
#1: Sheikh Mansour
Sheikh Mansour may seem like someone too busy to own a football club, after all, he is also part of the royal family of Abu Dhabi and UAE deputy prime minister. However, he has a reputation for running clubs and also owns New York City and Melbourne FC. His record signing was Kevin de Bruyne from Wolfsburg in 2015 for around £60 million. Arguably he may have signed someone for more money if it was not for the recent transfer ban.
Could It Be About to Change?
There are ongoing reports that aforementioned Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is about to sell the club to a consortium made up of British businesspeople and a Saudi Arabia group, including a national prince. If this takeover is to go through, Newcastle United could become the wealthiest football club in The Premier League. However, these rumours have gone on for over a year, and lots of doubt remains.
