The Athletic’s Liverpool reporter James Pearce has confirmed that young forward Ben Woodburn is set to join Sparta Rotterdam on loan.

Pearce stated that the 20-year-old is to join the Dutch Eredivisie side for the duration of the 2020/21 season.

Woodburn had been a target for English League One clubs Ipswich and Portsmouth but has chosen to continue his development abroad having struggled last term whilst on loan at Oxford United.

The youngster enjoyed a bright start to his loan spell at the Kassam Stadium before picking up injuries, including a broken foot, which meant the young Welshman’s progression was halted.

Now back to full fitness, Woodburn is ready to get back on the right track in Holland.

The 10 times capped Wales international still holds the record as the youngest senior Reds goalscorer after his League Cup strike against Saturday’s opponents Leeds United back in 2016.

After such a promising start to his Anfield career, things have fallen away slightly for Woodburn, an impressive year in a foreign climate could rejuvenate the clearly talented player.
