Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has backed his new striker Timo Werner to shake off a dead leg picked up during his debut against Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday night.

The forward was a threat throughout the match and won the penalty for Jorginho to open the scoring as Chelsea ran out eventual 3-1 winners.

Despite playing all 90 minutes, Werner picked up a knock whilst winning the penalty and was considered a doubt for the clash with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

However, the player is by no means ruled out of the game and Blues boss Lampard rated his star’s chances of being fit for the meeting:

We’ve got a bit of time for him to get right

This means Sunday’s match should see Liverpool face the former RB Leipzig man for the first time, having been heavily linked with his signature before the German forward joined Chelsea.

The Reds reportedly deterred from a deal, allowing the London club the opportunity to swoop in and land their man.

Jurgen Klopp’s side showed no signs of regret in a forward capacity as they kicked off their title defence scoring four, although this new-look Chelsea side could present a stern early test for the reigning champions.
