Despite the result, there were positives for Jurgen Klopp to take from the performance as the Reds showed improvements from their recent run of form, with Mohamed Salah looking especially sharp in front of goal once again.
Unfortunately, the central defensive quandary continued to cause issues for Klopp’s side as teenager Rhys Williams missed an opportunity to clear prior to United’s second goal.
Liverpool’s recent FA Cup successes, or rather lack thereof, means elimination from the competition won’t sting for too long, albeit against their greatest rivals.
With vital Premier League clashes on the horizon and the Champions League coming back into focus, the English champions can’t afford to feel sorry for themselves for long.
Here’s how we rated Klopp’s men from the disappointment at Old Trafford…
Alisson Becker - 6
Almost created a major problem for himself playing out from the back.
Could perhaps have done better with the Rashford goal.
Trent Alexander-Arnold - 7
Much improved performance. Everything happened quicker through him and with more purpose.
Rhys Williams - 5
Out of his depth through no fault of his own.
Missed his clearance and too quick to dive into tackles.
Fabinho - 6
Impressive yet again. Guilty of giving away the soft free-kick for the winner.
Missed massively in midfield still.
Andy Robertson - 6
Surprisingly less influential than Alexander-Arnold on the opposite side.
Played his part and was always available on the switch.
Thiago - 7
Showed his class with some wonderful passing and ability to avoid the onrushing press.
Tired as the match wore on and was replaced.
James Milner - 6
All-action as the experienced midfielder attempted to fill the void left by Jordan Henderson.
Squandered a huge chance to level.
Gini Wijnaldum - 6
Didn’t do a lot wrong but didn’t do a lot of note either.
A little inconspicuous.
Mohamed Salah - 8
Back to somewhere near his best. The first finish was exquisite.
His link-up with Alexander-Arnold was the major plus from the performance.
Curtis Jones - 7
Highly impressive performance from the 19-year-old out of position.
Confident on the ball and did his fair share of defensive work.
Roberto Firmino - 7
Assisted both goals and showed glimpses of his classy best.
The touch for his own opportunity left a lot to be desired.
Sadio Mane (Sub) - 6
Unable to have the desired impact off the bench.
Will be better for the rest after a hectic schedule in which he has been a mainstay.
Xherdan Shaqiri (Sub) - 6
Tried in vain to have a positive effect on the result.
His passing almost created an opportunity but United had shut up shop.
Divock Origi (Sub) - 6
Left a little in the dark over what next for his future.
Busy enough after coming on but lacks the quality at crucial times these days.
