# Trey Nyoni: Liverpool’s Next Big Midfield Gem

There is an unmistakable, crackling energy around L4 whenever Liverpool’s young starlets step up on matchday, but what transpired in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea felt like a genuine changing of the guard in midfield.

While 18-year-old winger [Rio Ngumoha](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/sky-is-the-limit-rio-ngumoha-blown-away-by-top-liverpool-player-vs-chelsea/)once again captivated the Anfield faithful with his direct, explosive running against his former club, it was fellow teenager [Trey Nyoni](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/sky-is-the-limit-rio-ngumoha-blown-away-by-top-liverpool-player-vs-chelsea/)who quietly ran the show from deep.

Speaking after the Reds sealed their place in the quarter-finals via a 6-5 penalty shootout win, Ngumoha lit up when asked by *Sporty TV* about the 19-year-old midfielder sitting alongside him in the dressing room:

> **“Trey is top. You guys haven’t even seen him at his top, top level. He still has definitely another level to go and he’s only 19. The sky is the limit for Trey and I’m really happy that he’s getting the minutes that he can to show himself, and also show everyone else how good he is. Yeah, he’s top.”**

> ## The Stats Behind Nyoni’s Masterclass vs. Chelsea
>
> For those of us watching from the Main Stand, what stood out wasn’t just Nyoni’s composure—it was his relentless appetite for the ball. Against a Chelsea midfield featuring million-pound recruitment, the England U21 prospect acted as Liverpool’s primary heartbeat:
>
> - **Total Touches:** 86 *(Highest of any player on the pitch)*
> - **Passes Completed:** 65 / 76
> - **Final Third Entries:** 7 forward passes pushing the tempo
> - **Defensive Work:** 6 defensive actions, including 2 tackles & 4 interceptions
> - **Duels Won:** 3/6 ground duels & 1/1 aerial duels
>
> While he didn’t grab an assist or attempt to spray 50-yard cross-field Hollywood passes (completing just 1 of 7 long balls), his press-resistance and defensive positioning provided the precise balance Andoni Iraola needed to execute heavy rotation without sacrificing control.
>
> ## A Long-Term Starter in the Making?
>
> Manager Andoni Iraola showered Nyoni with praise post-match, highlighting his physical endurance and ability to perform under high-stakes cup pressure. Having already trusted the youngster with a start against Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League, Iraola is clearly building a pathway for Nyoni to become a regular fixture in the engine room.
>
> From a fan’s perspective, seeing a 19-year-old step into the midfield and casually rack up more touches than anyone else on the pitch is pure joy. We’ve watched talent come through the academy for decades, but Nyoni possesses that rare, calm authority—stepping in, intercepting, and effortlessly wriggling out of pressure like a veteran.
