# Could Sancho play the long game and sign for Liverpool next year?

It may be unlikely that Jadon Sancho joins Liverpool this summer, but should he stay at Borussia Dortmund for another year, he could be a perfect addition after that.

The 20-year-old’s future continues to be up in the air, with a host of top clubs believed to be keen on signing him. A [Twitter](https://twitter.com/JanAageFjortoft/status/1243100118611525634?s=20) update provided by Viasport presenter Jan Arge Fjortoft claims that Liverpool are the front-runners to snap up the youngster, but only if they get rid of either Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane.

[Manchester United](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/03/02/man-united-move-ahead-of-liverpool-in-race-to-sign-sancho/) are also considered strong contenders to sign Sancho, as are [Chelsea](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2019/12/08/chelsea-set-to-bid-100m-for-jadon-sancho/).

With Timo Werner thought to be Liverpool’s [primary transfer target](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/02/19/liverpool-still-favourites-to-sign-werner/), it is hard to envisage the Reds also going in for the €130 million-rated Sancho in the coming weeks and months, especially as the idea of losing Salah or Mane is unrealistic.

I see a scenario that could work perfectly, however, assuming Sancho doesn’t head to United or Chelsea this summer.

Staying put at Dortmund for another season hasn’t been [completely ruled out,](https://twitter.com/JanAageFjortoft/status/1243100118611525634?s=20) and if Sancho really does want Liverpool over their rivals, this is surely the best outcome for him in the short-term.

Both United and Chelsea cannot guarantee Champions League football – will the season even be completed by the time the summer transfer window opens and closes? With that in mind, the forward may feel one more year in Germany makes sense, if Liverpool don’t want him immediately.

Then, 12 months down the line, Jurgen Klopp may be at a point where he is eyeing up a long-term replacement for Salah or Mane. By that point, both Liverpool superstars will be 29 and there is no ruling out one of them opting to leave, allowing them to make one more big move in their prime.

For now, the idea of potentially having Salah, Mane, Werner, Sancho and Roberto Firmino in the same squad feels excessive, with the Englishman arguably the least called for addition, especially as he could cost around double Werner’s fee.

It may be that Sancho ends up choosing United or Chelsea instead, and Liverpool miss out on him, but I think the best outcome for him is one more season at Dortmund, then a big-money switch to Anfield.
