# Dixon-Bonner faces lengthy absence after suffering knee injury

Liverpool midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner is set for a spell on the sidelines, having sustained a knee ligament injury.

The youngster picked up the issue in the Under-23s’ Premier League Cup win over Huddersfield Town last Friday, according to the *[Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-midfielder-dealt-knee-ligament-17813029)*.

Neil Critchley is thought to be hopeful that Dixon-Bonner will play again this season, although there is no guarantee of that happening.

The 19-year-old made his first-team [debut](https://www.lfchistory.net/SeasonArchive/Game/5764) earlier this month, coming on as a late substitute in the FA Cup fourth-round replay against Shrewsbury Town.

This is an undoubted blow for Dixon-Bonner, who has been a regular in Liverpool’s academy since [joining from Arsenal back in 2015](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/academy/player/elijah-dixon-bonner).

Having won the [FA Youth Cup](https://www.thefa.com/news/2019/apr/25/fa-youth-cup-final-report-manchester-city-liverpool-250419) with the Under-18s last season, he has since made the jump up to the U23s.

I think it is going to be tough for Dixon-Bonner to make it at Liverpool in the long-term, however, considering the number of midfielders ahead of him in the pecking order.

Jurgen Klopp has an array of stars to call upon, and with the Reds widely viewed as the [best club side on the planet](https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/025a-0e9f8fe852b8-ff94b0553a0e-1000--club-world-cup-firmino-wins-final-for-liverpool/) currently, only an exceptional youngster such as [Curtis Jones](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/academy/388035-match-report-u23s-sunderland-premier-league-cup) has a chance of making the grade, in my opinion.

It may be that a loan move makes sense for Dixon-Bonner next season, instead of potentially outgrowing the U23s.
